New-Gen Products Grab Nearly 40 Pct of Japan DVD Recorder Market in Feb.

Tokyo, Mar 12, 2008 (Jiji Press) - The share of new-generation DVD recorders in Japan's overall DVD recorder shipments in February came close to 40 pct on a value basis, a survey by a market research company showed Wednesday.

New-generation DVD recorders accounted for 36.8 pct of the total, the highest ever figure, BCN Inc. said.

Shipments grew in the reporting month as makers increased their output capacities after failing to meet growing demand in the year-end shopping season.

New-generation recorders feature such optical disc formats as Blu-ray, set by a consortium led by Sony Corp. <6758>, and High-Definition DVD, developed mainly by Toshiba Corp. <6502> and NEC Corp. <6701>.

On a volume basis, shipments accounted for 20.7 pct, topping the 20-pct threshold for the first time since November last year.

The average unit price came to 126,000 yen, against 57,000 yen for standard DVD recorders.

By maker, Sony captured top spot with a share of 57.6 pct in the new-generation DVD market on a volume basis, followed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. <6752> with 26.9 pct and Sharp Corp. <6753> with 10.3 pct. The three support the Blu-ray format.

Toshiba had a 5.2 pct share, even though the company in February decided to stop producing HD DVD products at the end of March and withdraw from the next-generation DVD market.
