Tokyo, Sept 21, 2007 (Jiji Press) - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. President Kazuo Hirai has said he believes the company will achieve its goal of selling 11 million units of its PlayStation 3 game console in fiscal 2007 ending next March. In the April-June first quarter, sales of the game machine totaled only 710,000 units. Despite the sluggish performance, SCE, a unit of Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp. <6758>, has not changed the annual target, expecting that sales will be bolstered by releases of new software titles for the console. The PS3 was launched in November last year. The company is stepping up efforts toward achieving the target, Hirai said in an interview. With regard to Sony's reported plan to retreat from production of state-of-the-art semiconductor products, including "Cell," the core part of the PS3, Hirai said that as a general rule, a company does not act in a way to disadvantage the business of its subsidiary. Sony is reportedly considering selling the operation to Toshiba Corp. <6502>. Hirai indicated that the company may consider boosting the capacity of the hard disk drive of the PS3 for the domestic market, saying that it will take such requests from users into account.
